My Weeds are Gone...I've Been Set Free

For our Fall Bible study, God has led our group to select Jen Hatmaker's book Tune In: Hearing God's Voice through the Static.

I love Jen Hatmaker, though not for the same reasons as my friend (and Bible study leader) Kelly. Girlfriend Jen, as we've come to call her (because she's always referring to her readers as 'Girls' and 'Girlfriends'), knocked me and my Bible study approach flat by reminding me of what God's Word says. We (He and me) can study the Bible all by ourselves and glean what He wants me to understand. That, and, that there are earthly resources to help with that understanding (like the dictionary, thesaurus and the plethora of translations and paraphrases of the Bible and study Bibles).

So, I've been dealing with this problem for a week now. With the help of all your blogs and prayers, and Jen's study from this week, God's Word on my problem is clear.

I knew the problem was with me. (I love how Jen puts this in her book: "I'm not pointing any fingers, but out of the two of you, only one is perfect. So if there is a guilty party--well, let's just say it's not God. Okay, it's you.") The big problem was that I was putting too much emphasis on analyzing the problem and not enough emphasis on what God wanted me to do (which was NOT to analyze the problem).

Big picture girl needed to take a larger step back, and be reminded of some basic Biblical principles that were being choked out by thorns (Matthew 13: 7).

Girlfriend Jen asked us to journal about the "Parable of the Soils" at the end of our Bible study for the week. I have definitely read this before, written about it before, talked and taught about this before. "OK, God, what's new today?" (Because there is always something new.)

He showed me the thorns I had in my garden. In this passage, thorns are actually weeds that come up, even after plowing has been done. So, parts of my garden are blooming. But, I have this section that had these thorns come up, even after I thought I had "plowed through" that issue before. Persistent, deep-rooted weeds!

My issue involves a lack of humility and a lack of submission. Jen brought up something that left me with a question. Fortunately, there was a verse attached to her statement, so I did some reading. That reading led to further reading, which led me straight to the Truth about my problem! And I definitely had a lack of understanding--honestly, it was a flat-out misinterpretation on my part. Something I had let others explain differently. Whoa...or more accurately, Woe!

I believe God has pulled the weeds permanently today, though I am praying for continued application of weed-killer, if you know what I mean! Since I've had these weeds come up before, can I say with certainty that they won't come up again? Not without the One who tends my garden and gives me the new fertile soil upon which His seed will grow.

* * *

I had missed the significance of something else in that passage as well. (And Jesus says it twice, so woe again to me for missing that....He is abounding in grace!)

"And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty." (vs. 8)

The seed that falls on the good soil doesn't yield the same crop, the same amount of fruit, among believers. When I cross-referenced passages in Genesis and Job, the key to the passages is not the "hundredfold." God doesn't say that we all have to strive to yield that. He says that HE will bless us, so long as we bear the fruit, grow where we are planted. HE provides the blessing, the result.

It was such a huge reminder for me that even as I strive to do the right thing, that EVERYTHING is under His control, His blessing. And the quantity of fruitfulness is not my doing but His.

Thank you all for your prayers and words of encouragement in this past week. I have been blessed by your fruit! What better way to end this blog than with the quote Girlfriend Jen has on her homepage. (NOT a coincidence to find that there today!)

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.”
- Isaiah 55:10-11

I, too, am loving the girlfriend Jen study. She makes you laugh your head off one minute, then gently convicts you to tears the next. (that not pointing finger thing still gets the point across!)

I am so glad that you found that weed and got rid of it, and I pray that God blesses you mightly...and that you will be content with the blessing whether it be 100, 60 or 30. It is so hard to be content with just 30 when someone else has 100 - but it's not about us is it?

Blessings to you, Girlfriend Sue!

Oh Sue J, I think this is definetly one of your very best posts. Maybe becasue I could relate so well to it in so many ways.

Learning submission when I don't like the circumstances is a hard lesson for me. At one point God kept giving me a picture of my little (hard-headed) Emily with her arms crossed and frown on her face. He reminded me of how proud of her I would be when she would soften and submit even though it was hard. I was just like that! I'm so glad He's willing to weed my garden.

I'm so glad that you have the answers that you were looking for AND that you discovered them by searching out His Word.

At times I look at "the fruit" and the riches we are saving eternally as lost souls who through our lives we've helped turn them home to God. We may not see them turn towards God, so we may never see our crops come to fruition. But in thinking in it that way, a crop of one would certainly have been worth the effort.

Billy Graham's crop may be exponentially abundant.... but that one may not listen to a minister but may live next door to you and see how you live and love Your Lord.

God says each one is important - the shepherd leaves the 99 to find the one. So a small crop to God is just as important as the big HUGE crop!

I encourage you as you are content with your small crop (which actually may be a HUGE crop) as we will not see the fruition until we are called home!

This is such an encouraging post!

That weed had better stay away! But if it does come back, let us know so we can bring out the weed repellent as a team!

I'm not sure if I mentioned it to you, but about a month ago I started keeping a journal of Bible verses or quotes from others that I could relate to. (see, not only do you all have me reading the Bible more, reading the dictionary and Thesaurus more and opening up more...now you have me journaling too!) Anyway, I had to write down that quote about "I'm not pointing any fingers, but...".

I'm so glad to "hear" a lift in your voice today!

P.S. I forgot to add, that picture of the apples was so clear and beautiful that it made me want to reach out and grab one...(I didn't though).

Hi Girlfriend Sue (this is Girlfriend Jen)! My Girlfriend Anna FORCED me to do this blog alert thingy, which sends me blogs that mention my name (how narcissistic, right??). Anyhow, I'm so glad she made me, because I'm getting to read beautiful posts like yours' today! So many, many blessings to you as you troll through my studies and pick up a little treasure here or there. (Yay, God! He can make good out of any silly writer's ramblings.) Keep pulling those weeds, girl. Be sure to let God get the root.

Hugs and love to all your fun girlfriends and to you!

On this Merry Christmas Night....

Merry Christmas, blog friends! I know you're wondering, "Did she finish painting her family room (finally....)??" (Nope!) * * * D oesn't this look like how our days are sometimes? Myriad things scattered about, unfinished. Trying to take a cozy, restful seat by the fire, but still that seat stays empty. We try to make things brighter, but the light strings don't quite have the power to make things clear for us. And we wonder how many coats it will take to cover up what had been there before, without splotches and unevenness. (Three may just be right--sigh....!) * * * We may have things unfinished. We may have "miscalculated" the use of our time. Or perhaps we were called away to other things for which we were needed, even if they weren't part of our plans. Even in our peaceful approach to Christmas, that seat of rest may be vacant. But the opportunity to "Be still...." doesn't always lie in a cozy sea

When I was 45....

I t was a very good year! (Yep, celebrating again! I hijacked my own blog--LOL!) The glass is half full, and things have never looked more browniful! Awesome day on tap.... sunshine, take-out barbecue for dinner, cake.... Thanks for celebrating with me! Enjoy.... ( Let it rise....One of my all-time favorite praise songs! )

L ong before we bloggers celebrated our first 100 posts, the psalmists provided us with theirs. In recognition of my 100th, let's celebrate by looking at the Bible's "Post #100" (a.k.a., Psalm 100, A Psalm for Thanksgiving or Thank Offering): Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Surprisingly, there is no direct Hebrew translation for the English word 'joyful' as used in this verse in the King James Version. That leaves things a bit open to interpretation. My study Bible (NASB) says 'joyful' is "a shout of loyalty and homage." The dictionary defines 'joy' with the word rejoicing, meaning "to be made glad again." 'Noise,' however, does come with a Hebrew equivalent, meaning "to split the ears with sound," as in to shout, shout for joy. Lands implies all the earth, the nations, the world. We, those of all nations, are to present to the Lord, out of our loyalty and homage to Him, joyful shouts that
